House Roof Design For Cooler, Rain-Ready Indian Homes

House Roof Design
India has an extreme climate, and the house facade design needs to offer functionality along with aesthetics. It is an interface between the inside and the outside and filters sunlight, withstands the rain, and encourages cross-ventilation.
Indian homes with climate-responsive facade design
These homes show how facade design withstands the weather and offers aesthetic appeal:
A house in Bengaluru was built near the forest, and its colour catches your attention. When you look closer, you will find hanging greens that make the house look stunning. The homeowner wanted to build the house around the trees and also preserve them. At the same time, the owner wants the house to have all functional requirements.
The house was designed around integrating the trees into the living space and visually extending the house into the surrounding greenery. The house has a ground floor and two more floors. The house roof design combined vegetable farming and solar panels. To maintain privacy and block the harsh sunlight, planter box screens were angled at 45 degrees on the facade. It also attracted birds and butterflies. The main advantage was that it regulated the house’s climate and maintained cool interiors.
This house is located in Rajasthan and has a striking architecture. Curved wave-like walls, graceful arches, scalloped edges and lines that rise and fall create a visually appealing built-form. The house is designed to withstand the desert’s aridity and heat. The goal was to offer comfortable living in a region that experiences an average temperature of 40 °C and even higher in the summer.
To withstand the climate, a simple structure was created and covered in a sheath of shear walls, which were strategically punctured to provide passive cooling and cool interiors. This also created open spaces all along the perimeter of the house with deeper recesses on garden-facing walls. The cover reduced the heat gain and provided sheltered open spaces around the house for each room,
This house is located in Hyderabad and combines handcrafted earth constructions with climate-responsive planning. The goal was to build a house that can withstand the Deccan climate.
The house was designed to be climate-conscious and incorporated solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and passive strategies for ventilation and daylight. The design combined vernacular roofing systems like terracotta Guna vaults and brick-jack arches to create a noticeable drop in temperature from the outside heat.

- Clay tiles have been used for roofs for centuries and are one of the best options. They give a traditional and visually appealing look, and provide temperature regulation.
- Colour-coated sheets have become immensely popular and are available in a variety of aesthetically pleasing colours.
- Glass roofs have also become a popular roofing option as they add an element of luxury and style. The glass roof protects from direct sunlight and rain while allowing natural light to flow into the house.
